The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011, when it surged by 13% y-o-y. Global import peaked of 3.2M tonnes in 2016, leveling off in the following year.

In value terms, cabbage imports stood at $2.1B in 2017. In general, it indicated a remarkable expansion from 2007 to 2017: the total imports value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, cabbage imports increased by +92.3% against its level of 2007. Global import peaked in 2017, and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Cabbage Imports By Country

China, Hong Kong SAR (662K tonnes), and the U.S. (504K tonnes) represented roughly 37% of total imports of cabbage and other brassicas in 2017. Canada (205K tonnes) occupied the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (191K tonnes), and Malaysia (152K tonnes). All these countries together took near 17% share of total imports. Viet Nam (135K tonnes), Russia (124K tonnes), Thailand (105K tonnes), the Netherlands (84K tonnes), El Salvador (64K tonnes), the Czech Republic (60K tonnes), and Singapore (58K tonnes) took the weak share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Thailand (+28.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($413M), Canada ($311M), and China, Hong Kong SAR ($282M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, together accounting for 48% of global imports. Germany, the Netherlands, Viet Nam, Malaysia, Russia, Thailand, Singapore, the Czech Republic and El Salvador lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Thailand (+37.5% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 10 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cabbage Import Prices By Country

The average cabbage import price stood at $667 per tonne in 2017, jumping by 4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017 it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013, an increase of 11% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average import price for cabbage attained its maximum level in 2017, and is expected to retain its growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was Canada ($1,515 per tonne), while El Salvador ($67 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by Thailand (+6.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
