The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, butter and ghee imports increased by +42.6% against its level of 2015. Over the period under review, butter and ghee imports attained its maximum level in 2017, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

Butter and ghee Imports By Country

The imports of the twelve major importers of butter and ghee, namely France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, China, the UK, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, the U.S., and Australia, represented more than half of total import.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by China (+20.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($1.2B), Germany ($801M), and Belgium ($773M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, with a combined 29% share of global imports. The Netherlands, Russia, China, the UK, Italy, the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

China (+29.8% per year) had the highest rates of growth with regard to the imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 10 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Butter and ghee Import Prices By Country

In 2017, the average import price for butter and ghee amounted to $5,293 per tonne, going up by 43% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017 it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017, when import increased by 43% from the previous year level. In that year, average import price for butter and ghee attained its maximum level, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was the U.S. ($6,729 per tonne), while Australia ($3,532 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by the U.S. (+10.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
