Vaughan Psychotherapist Encourages Canadian Youth to Talk About Their Struggles With Mental Illness

November 19 21:45 2018
Mental health has been gaining more and more territory on political agendas, however many Canadian children and teenagers are still left waiting for help, many give up and take their own lives without the support needed, parents and families are left helpless and vulnerable, communities are shattered and there is so more that can be done.

Alexandra Gusinsky, a leading Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) known for her expert and gentle approach to mental health, is steadfast in her commitment to playing a role in promoting positive mental health across young people of Vaughan and wider communities to prevent the onset or worsening of mental illnesses, and enhance recovery. To be successful in achieving this, it is critical that every Canadian understands how dangerous the current landscape is: mental health-related hospitalizations among people from as little as 5 years old to 24 had spiked by a shocking 66% in the last 10 years with Ontario holding the highest number of such emergency visits1, about 11 Canadians commit suicide on any given day2 and the burden of mental health issues in Ontario is more than 1.5 times than that of all cancers combined3, among many other devastating statistics.

“Research tells us that at least 70% of adult mental illnesses begin in childhood and we can clearly observe the repercussions of that today, with soaring numbers of adults having their lives debilitated by issues that could have been otherwise prevented or resolved. It’s all the more worrisome to learn the current mental state of many children and young adults, and as a specialist who takes the issue very seriously and even personal, it’s difficult not to be alarmed about their future health and well-being. It’s heartbreaking to see children and parents struggling altogether and teenagers taking their own lives. It’s a real crisis that fills our communities with grief and frustration, but we can do something about it. Raising awareness and breaking down stigmas, while delivering the highest standards of services with care and understanding are at the very top of my agenda,” Alexandra said recently.

The Vaughan-based psychotherapist offers a wide range of therapeutic modalities, including cognitive behavioural therapy, coherence therapy, existential therapy, family therapy, mindfulness training and life coaching to equip children, teenagers and their families with the right tools to help them cope, manage and overcome mental illnesses.
