Industrial Saw Maker Gains Precision, Safety, and Serviceability with Advanced, Highly Integrated Siemens Fail‐Safe PLCs, Drives and Other Components

Portland, OR – Portland Oregon-based manufacturing company, Pacific Trail Manufacturing, Inc. provides a wide variety of cross-cut saws for processing milled, and engineered wood products. Pacific Trail builds saws that are in high demand all around the world with their products reaching as far as the small Middle-Eastern Country Kuwait. Their customer base consists of lumber remanufacturers, pallet makers, and residential truss and stud manufacturers. Staying purposefully small, the successful company is made up of only 10 people with no task being too menial for any employee. President Tom Langton often deals with sales while co-owner Bruce Wold managing engineering, installations, and service.

President of Pacific Trail, Tom Langton, says “Any company using high volumes of cut‐to‐length wood products can benefit from our specialized saws. They produce consistently precise cuts despite variability in the wood feedstock, which can be dry or wet. If it’s the latter, a palette of feedstock can weigh up to 20,000 pounds, but our custom saws can still position and cut to our customers’ precise requirements.”

The company recently upgraded their most sophisticated cross-cut saw, the Accu-Cut. The Accu-Cut now operates with the automated precision and control of a computer numerical control machine allowing the saw to more precisely hold and position tons of milled lumber or wood products for exceptionally precise cuts. Not only creating consistency in product, but the machine also does the job in 10 minutes with only one worker, opposed to 45 minutes and three or more workers like other saws.

With consistency being key to them and their customers, Langton explains  “With a unit saw, you can create 200‐plus 92‐5/8” studs in under two minutes. But if the cutting tolerance of the saw isn’t consistent in holding 92‐5/8′′, you’ve created a finished product very quickly that you can’t use or sell.” The Acc-cut was undoubtedly due for an upgrade and Pacific Trail surely delivered. Previously, had the Accu-Cut gone down a customer’s production could be down for days, staff would have to troubleshoot the problem with Pacific Trail providing support over the phone. Victor Gonzalez, a controls engineer with Charter Controls, Inc. (a long time Pacific Trail partner) explains that, prior to its upgrade(s), an Accu-Cut saw going out could result in “lost production and add up to tens of thousands of dollars a day, not to mention the missed delivery commitments and resulting order backlog.”

Since 1996, Pacific Trail Manufacturing, Inc. has led its industry in providing a wide range of crosscut saws to help customers quickly and accurately process milled or engineered wood products with the least time and labor. Their powerful, industrial chainsaws can process full units of lumber, plywood and other wood to length quickly and to a variety of tolerances.  Pacific Trail prides themselves in valuing that time is indispensable to their customers resulting in their mission to design, engineer and build their saws to be as reliable and easily serviceable as possible.
