World Citizen is a biography that reveals travel as a formative force in Ginsberg’s life. Moving from one journey to the next, it shows how and where Ginsberg’s beliefs originated as he wandered around. It reveals how ‘Howl’ would have been impossible without a visit to Mexico, and ‘Kaddish’ without a visit to France. And India, where Ginsberg turned into a mantra-chanting, bearded hippie sage, was a country that utterly changed him.

David Wills has done thorough research, and while the work was in progress, also wrote several articles on Ginsberg’s travels and their importance, such as his trips to Greece, Asia, and Africa. World Citizen is the first meticulous work of its kind that explores in great detail the influence travel had on Ginsberg’s poetry.
