Elitha Donner Elementary stands out as 1 of the 120 schools in California that is recognized as a platinum level Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) school. PBIS is a framework that schools use to enforce positive behavior and create an effective learning environment through the “implementation of a continuum of evidence-based interventions.” (pbisca.org) Through school wide initiatives, Donner Elementary has created an environment conducive to learning in line with PBIS and responsive classroom practices.

PBIS focuses on four main elements to promote positive behaviors including, data for decision making, measurable outcomes, successful practices and systems that support the implementation of effective practices.

Donner Elementary School has implemented the PBIS approach through its W.A.V.E Program which stands for wise, accountable, vigilant and empathetic. These standards are made known to teachers, students and parents to help ensure a quality approach to education.

Behavior expectations are made clear to students in whatever setting they are in, which could be the classroom, bathroom, lunchroom, etc. These expectations are reinforced regularly, and students are rewarded with W.A.V.E cards when they exhibit positive behavior. W.A.V.E cards can be traded for beach bucks and used in the “Surf Shop” to purchase prizes or privileges. W.A.V.E cards reinforce positive behavior and help to encourage students who misbehave to change their patterns.

With Donner Elementary Schools PBIS approach, behavioral issues are qualified as either a minor or major infraction. For major infractions, students are sent to the office and the parent/guardian is contacted. For minor infractions, students are redirected or receive a reminder about expected behavior, given an in-class timeout, sent to a buddy class to refocus or lose privileges.

Parents can help support the PBIS approach by reviewing behavior expectations at home, incorporating positive reinforcements and volunteering at the “Surf Shop”.
