Dr. Mulatu Lemma Selected as Top Professor of the Year by IAOTP

Professor Mulatu Lemma, Ph.D. Mathematics Professor at Savannah State University, has been selected as Top Professor of the Year 2023 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). 

Inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations, and contributions to their communities. All honorees are invited to attend the IAOTPs annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements.

With more than 30 years of experience as a seasoned and trusted Professor, Mulatu Lemma has certainly proven himself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field of education. Professor Lemma has been teaching mathematics at Savannah State University for 28 years. He has previously dedicated five years to teaching and mentoring at Awash Junior College in Ethiopia.

Dr. Lemma’s unwavering passion for mathematics traces its roots back to his formative years, serving as a driving force behind his decision to embark on a professional journey dedicated to sharing this enthusiasm with others. He has dedicated his career to increasing the representation of minorities in mathematics and other STEM fields through the impactful practice of mentoring. He has consistently shown a solid dedication to mentoring activities in mathematics, specifically focused on minority students with an inclination toward math. His goal is to provide them with a solid foundation to support their success in school and their future careers. His objective is to produce a new generation of highly skilled mathematics students through active mentoring programs. Dr. Lemma is deeply committed to mentoring students, guiding them in developing self-confidence, self-esteem, and research experience.  

Before embarking on his career, Dr. Lemma earned a Bachelor of Arts from Addis Ababa University in 1977. He continued his studies and obtained a Master of Arts in applied mathematics in 1982 and a Master of Arts in pure mathematics in 1993. He completed his doctoral studies at Kent State University in 1994.

Throughout his illustrious career, Lemma has received awards, accolades and was recognized for his outstanding leadership as a mathematics professor and mentor.

Dr. Lemma has received various awards for his achievements throughout his career. In 2020, Professor Lemma was honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. The award recognizes individuals who have made substantial contributions to mentoring and supporting the future workforce in the fields of science, technology, mathematics, and engineering.

Although Professor Lemma received many other awards, he considers the mentorship award the most meaningful. Some other awards include Dr. Lemma being honored as Distinguished Professor at Savannah State University. He received the University System of Georgia Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Award for Faculty in Regional and State Universities; he was recognized as the Georgia Professor of the Year the following year and was one of the most highly awarded professors in Georgia. 

Professor Lemma also introduced the Mulatu Numbers to the world’s mathematical community. Mulatu Numbers are integral sequences of the following numbers: 4,1, 5,6,11,17,28,45…These numbers have fascinating patterns and features.

The President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami, stated, “Choosing Dr. Lemma for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make. He is brilliant, has tremendous foresight, and contributed so much expertise to the field. We are honored to have him as a member of our organization. We look forward to meeting him at our Annual Awards Gala this year.”

Looking back, Professor Lemma attributes his success to his perseverance, research, work ethic, and the mentors he has had along the way. When he is not working, he enjoys spending time with his family. For the future, he hopes to continue to mentor his students and inspire them in the field of Mathematics. Up to now, he published more than  200 papers on per reviewed journals
