Trend Spotter and Author of Ubertrends, Michael Tchong, Weighs In on the Casual Living Ubertrend in Light of the Growing Surge in Audience Misbehavior Toward Performers

August 29 00:06 2023
Even with artists calling to end this dangerous trend, the tide has turned on concert etiquette, giving way to unruly concertgoers.

Trends and innovations are shaping the future, some for the better, others not so much. In an unsettling new trend, unruly concertgoers have been disrupting performers at live shows and events, further narrowing the thin line between artists and their fans. In the past few months alone, Ava Max, Bebe Rexha, Drake, Miranda Lambert, Cardi B., and other artists have been victims of disruptive audiences during performances. On Jun. 19, 2023, a fan hurled a cellphone at Bebe Rexha. She shared the resulting injury on Instagram.

Once regarded as gatherings for fans and artists to connect through live performances, concerts, and events have become dangerous to celebrities due to the growing pattern of audience misbehavior. Michael Tchong, founder of Toolhacker LLC, trend analyst extraordinaire, and author of “Ubertrends: How Trends and Innovation Are Transforming Our Future,” sheds light on this alarming phenomenon.

Tchong says the erosion of concert etiquette is a direct result of the Casual Living Ubertrend, a pervasive shift giving way to a culture of informality and eroding traditional norms of decency. In his detailed recount of the rise of casual living, Tchong sums up the Ubertrend as “The Evaporation of Decorum.” He explores how this wave has gradually transformed various aspects of life, from clothing to sports, politics, pop culture, and more, and given rise to a new behavioral code that champions disruptive behaviors like bullying, trolling, road, and air rage.

Further shedding light on this societal shift, Tchong calls to attention the inadvertent surge of entitlement, disregard for boundaries, and detachment from consequences, resulting from a mostly anonymous society and the rise of the Unwired, Digital Lifestyle, and Voyeurgasm Ubertrends. Unlike most trends, Ubertrends cause far-reaching and permanent changes in societal attitudes and values. “Ubertrends are massive waves that cascade through society, leaving many subtrends in their turbulent wake,” Tchong said in an exclusive interview.

Circling back to the spate of attacks on performers, emboldened audiences to continue to take their bad behavior from the digital space to the real world, completely reshaping the audience-fan dynamic. The trajectory of this Ubertrend could culminate in the erosion of civility and decorum unless collective action is taken and responsibility assumed.

“It would take a monumental effort on the part of the government, educational institutions, and businesses to counter this tsunami — a possibility should things worsen considerably, but improbable in today’s could-care-less world,” writes Tchong in his book excerpt that documents the rise of Casual Living.

As the world continues to come to terms with the relaxation of traditional norms and the adoption of a more informal lifestyle, it seems unlikely that the trend of bad behavior will settle down. Tchong predicts that more ill-mannered audience members will continue to threaten the future of civilized behavior at concerts. He, however, offers a blueprint for a better-behaved society, highlighting innovative ideas, education, and the assumption of responsibility by parents, leaders, educators, and society as the turning point for this unsavory phenomenon.
