Author Dave Lassam takes readers into a journey of his recollection of the almost four decades he had spent serving the country through a career in the military in “The Man for the Job: My 39 Years Service in the Royal Australian Navy,” now available in leading digital book stores globally.
While a military career may be something only some people take the time to contemplate in life, Lassam has clearly set the tone of his hopes and dreams for the nation while feeling the “privilege to have been able not only to serve in the war zone but also to have made a difference.”
“The Man for the Job” contains Lassam’s memories of an impressive career and covers a wide array of subjects, from his attendance at car accidents, reviving individuals who had had heart attacks, and working in disaster zones to provide humanitarian assistance.
“I wrote this at the behest of many of my civilian friends with whom I had told these stories and also for myself. I have been involved in some of the biggest news stories in Australia, including my role in the evacuation of Australian nationals from Bali after the Bali Bombings, to commanding a group of medical specialists and sailors who deployed with the US Navy during humanitarian missions to the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean,” wrote Lassam, adding that a driving motivation behind coming up with the book was to advocate for the Australian Defense Forces (ADF).
While the author, a faithful public servant, highlights the triumphs of the defense forces, he also dives deep into the undesirable aspects of military life, such as being volunteered to do particular duties and the discomfort of sporting heavy uniforms for ceremonial security functions.
More than anything, however, “The Man for the Job” is a powerful tribute to Lassam’s vocation and the men and women who risk life and limb for their country. It’s an homage to those on the frontline of war and ready to die for their nation and people.
“The Man for the Job” also covers his diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a mental health condition triggered by a terrifying event, as well as Prostate cancer. These two conditions, according to Lassam, “basically ended his career.”
