Sugar Cookie Books and author Tiffany Obeng are answering the call for a STEM initiative with a children’s book series that underscores Black representation in science, tech, engineering, and math.
NAEP research indicates that 75% of high school students are not proficient in math at their level. The Department of Defense recently sounded the alarm for a greater STEM initiative, stating that American’s poor math skills are a national security threat. According to the Pew Research Center, Black workers are underrepresented in STEM fields.
Tiffany Obeng is the owner of Sugar Cookie Books, a specialty publisher offering kid lit with an emphasis on amplifying Black voices. She is the author of “Andrew Learns About Scientists” and “Andrew Learns About Engineers”, the latter of which has been an Amazon #1 bestseller multiple times. The same book has been recognized as the best children’s book about engineers for elementary-aged children and is a top 10 book on Amazon.
“Data shows that only 12% of kids want to be engineers, but that’s mainly because most children don’t know being an engineer is an available career; they don’t know it exists,” said Obeng. “I wrote ‘Andrew Learns About Engineers’ and ‘Andrew Learns About Scientists’ in a response to this statistic and to inspire children’s future in STEM. I strongly believe if they can see it, they can be it.”
