Riya Kumar, a senior in high school, made it her mission to educate herself about three of America’s most heated debates: abortion, gun laws, and mental health. In her book, The Greatest American Debates, these three topics are dissected, proving facts and opinions from both sides of the debate.
This 17-year-old’s mission was to emphasize the common ground embedded within these issues to bring a sense of unity to the polarized United States. “Nobody is too young to create change,” Kumar says. The violence that has been apparent in this nation is extremely unsettling and needs to be addressed. Living in Omaha, Nebraska has spurred Kumar’s interest in bipartisan views due to the versatility of political opinions. Nebraska being a red state and Omaha a blue city, Riya was exposed to diverse opinions at school and other public places.
“I was constantly being surrounded by people with opposing viewpoints. Instead of being repelled by those who differed from me, I was intrigued. I wanted to explore this on a national level and look at the issues that are tearing this country apart,” she explains. These interactions with bipartisan viewpoints inspired Kumar to begin her journey as a young author. “The words abortion, gun laws, and mental health have almost become forbidden in public places. I never understood why.
They are all issues that affect the whole country, so we need to be talking about them in a civil manner,” she says. Kumar plans on furthering her education at the college level, pursuing a degree on the pre-law track. Her love for politics has flourished and her view on the world has changed as she experienced her own ideas being challenged during the process of writing her book. She is drawn to making our world a better place, which begins with unification.
She hopes her book will be the starting point. “I’ve never appreciated the importance of listening to the other side of an issue until now. It’s something that I hope to share with the world” Kumar says. What started as a passion project has now evolved into a possible career path for Riya Kumar.
