OCTOBER 30, 2023 – Imagine a wheelable storage container that doubles as a closet and triples as a backyard shed. That’s what one inventor, Steve Dowell, claims is offered by his invention, the “ModCon” (their trademark product name that is short for modular container).
Steve of “Solid Steve” (a Texas based company), was a US service member in 2020 when he rethought how to better organize his gear for big moves. With overseas military training canceled at the height of the pandemic, Steve had been forced to keep various tools, uniforms, and gear in the basement of his home when he dreamt of a better storage and moving solution. The results? A solution Steve claims eliminates the need to ever pack again. He recently revealed his prototype of the ModCon on their crowdfunding pre-launch page at, https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-modcon-ultimate-gear-storage-solution/coming_soon/.
The ModCon will offer buyers a rotational-molded plastic storage container that has internal sliding bins to store belongings, can be walked into through doors, and expands by connecting to other ModCons side-by-side with ceiling and floor panels and can eventually act as “your war room” (the company’s trademark phrase). It requires no tools and takes less than five minutes to assemble. When being transported, the doors, ceiling, and floor panels each stow neatly on the ModCon’s front and sides where the user can tilt and wheel the container anywhere by themselves.
The ModCon is today’s equivalent of a steamer trunk from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, but one where containers can seemingly be attached to expand infinitely (limited only by how many one buys).
All-in-all, the ModCon measures just over 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide when closed with one unit having about 26 cubic feet of storage space (about the same space as a refrigerator for a family of five or more). Steve asserts the ModCon will be “weather resistant” as each face of The ModCon features a seal that compresses with lockable butterfly latches (common on military containers), capable of withstanding hundreds of pounds. It even has a small external rubber grommet that allows the user to pass power cords, water, or vented air from the outside into the ModCon interior (like something out of a sci-fi or spy movie).
When it’s time to move, disassembly takes the same time it did to assemble (five minutes or less) and the ModCon can simply be wheeled off by a single person or picked up by its handles.
Steve plans to achieve production by launching the ModCon’s crowdfunding campaign with pre-sales in early 2024 on Indiegogo.com, and currently has a patent pending.
